Millions of people use an iPhone and that means millions of people like me have an Apple ID, the account you use to log into the Apple ecosystem. It should come as no surprise that the Apple ID is an irresistible target for scammers.
I’ve seen these types of scams pretty regularly. If you recive an email that appears to be from Apple Support indicatiting that your account is locked (or needs to be reset, or alarmist messages of suspicious activity, etc.), pause before you click and examine the message.
Don’t fall for the Apple ID scams!
It’s unlikely that your account has been locked and if you have two-step verification turned on, you would have seen other indicators of real suspicious activity.
Here’s how to spot the scam:
- Check the reply to email address. It may say Apple ID or Apple Support but the actual address is not even close.
- Hover over hyperlinks to see where they are leading you. Don’t click.
- If you need to log into your Apple account, reset your password, or adjust security settings, navigate directly to https://appleid.apple.com.
- If you did click on a link or enter credentials – don’t worry, it happens. I would suggest resetting your password enabling two-step verification just to be safe.
